Mitchell Falls

Mitchell Falls is located in the Mitchell River National Park which was gazetted in 2000 and seeks to protect cultural and natural heritage values of the land. The park covers 115,300ha and is the home to the Warnumbal People, they co-manage the park with Department of Parks and Wildlife.

The Mitchell Falls (Punamii-unpuu) is a place of cultural and spiritual significance for the Warnambal people and is the main home of the Gunggur (Rainbow) Serpent. Due to this no swimming is permitted in the pools below the top of the falls.

For a bird’s eye view of the Mitchell Falls, we recommend Aviair’s Falls Discoverer scenic air safari. Offering breathtaking views of some of the famous highlights within the North Kimberley region the Falls Discoverer departs on Saturdays between May and October following a flight path that takes in the view of majestic waterfalls, cattle stations, wilderness reserves and incredible coastal views.  Tracking over the Ord Irrigation Area, El Questro, the King George Falls, Berkeley River, Cambridge Gulf, and the Mitchell Falls this full day safari covers an area the size of Central Europe.  During the Falls Discoverer you will stop at the remote Mitchell Plateau airstrip for an opportunity to stretch your legs and enjoy a famous Kimberley burger at the Drysdale River Station, a remote cattle station that welcomes Aviair’s scenic tour customers.

This beautiful four Tier Waterfall is fed by the Mitchell River and is most spectacular just after a large downpour when the four tiers are hard to distinguish due to the massive amount of cascading water. Another amazing scene near the Mitchell Falls is Big Mertens which is approximately 60 meter single drop waterfall.

Mitchell river national park is blanketed with pockets of Rainforest and open woodland including plants such as Livistona eastonii palms, pandanus, grey box and white gums just to name a few.

Up to 50 mammal species, 220 bird species and 86 kinds of reptiles and amphibians may occur in the area, including the saltwater crocodile.

The Mitchell Plateau and Kimberley Coast is home to a handful of Luxury Safari Style Accommodation such as Ngauwudu Safari CampOutback Spirit, Mitchell Falls Wilderness Park - APT and Kimberley Coastal Camp.
