King George Falls

The King George River descends 216 metres over a distance of approximately 112 kilometres. This includes the famous descent of the dual drop waterfall of King George Falls, which is located approximately 12 kilometres upriver from the river’s mouth.

King George Falls

The recorded height of the King George waterfall varies widely, with some sources claiming the descent is in the range of an extraordinary eighty to one hundred metres over a sandstone cliff into tidal waters. The King George falls present an astounding view and create a huge draw to the area.  King George falls can be viewed by boat and by air.

For an ultimate bird’s eye view of the King George Falls, Aviair’s Mitchell Falls Discoverer scenic air tour offers breathtaking views of some of the most magnificent highlights of the North Kimberley, including several orbits around the stunning King George Falls.

Departing from Kununurra, the Mitchell Falls Discoverer delivers the view of majestic waterfalls, cattle stations, wilderness reserves and incredible coastal views.  Flying over the Ord Irrigation Area, El Questro, the King George Falls, Berkeley River, Cambridge Gulf, and last but not least the Mitchell Falls, this full day air tour covers an area the size of Central Europe.

Land at the Mitchell Plateau to transfer to a helicopter which will transfer you to the start of the 4.5km hike into the top of the Mitchell Falls. There you can swim in the top pools, picnic and view the 4 tiered falls from the surrounding cliffs. A scenic helicopter flight takes you from the top of the  Mitchell Falls, over them and back to the airstrip to connect to your plane flight returning to Kununurra.

The time to view the King George Falls in full force is from late December through to early May each year, however the scenic wonder of this highlight can be enjoyed year round.  Even when not flowing, it is still a spectacular river gorge, best viewed from the air. The falls were featured in Baz Luhrmann's 2008 film, Australia.
